Star Wars Episode 7: The Rumours

January 05, 2013

Star Wars will be with us soon, or rather in about two years’ time. The hope is that new blood will be blown into the lungs of what many believe is the DOA state of the Star Wars saga. George Lucas had effectively ruined the lives of the forty something crowd who bounced their way to the cinema in 1977, wide eyed and clueless.

Many felt physically violated when they endured what was episodes 1 to 3, and are collectively praying, murmuring incantations and casting mage spells on Disney in the hope that the return to form will appear.

So, the blogosphere is awash with rumours of the announcement of who could be directing and or writing this upcoming movie. Are we really going to see Hamill, Fisher and Ford return? I hope not, because much like Sunset Boulevard’s Gloria Swanson, their time has come and past. If there is to be a new Star Wars movie, then it should be just that, new, untouched, resplendent and untarnished by the festering pool of matter that was Episodes 1 to 3.

Like Jordan at a press conference, there are a lot of eyes on this new film. The choice of writer and director are key. The actors are also vital, they should be able to convey the newness of episode 7 and not end up looking like a brooding hooded teenager whose constant expression resembles that of your typical angst riddled beer swilling, “I hate The World†young person we see every day.

With George Lucas, riding off into the sunset, let us , eagerly look forward to what could be , and I certainly hope will be, the beginning of a new age. But be warned, if change does not occur, the legacy of “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away†may be as useless, vacuous, boring and uneventful as a press conference by the Kardashians.
