267 – Pediatric TBI: Real-life Research – Jessica Salley Riccardi, PhD CCC-SLP

February 14, 2023

If you got a consult for a pediatric TBI patient, would you expect them to be like any other peds patient? Or maybe like your adult TBI patients? Or... maybe you have no idea what to expect at all! There is little research to guide our practice with this unique population, but my guest this week is changing that!

In this episode of SYP, I have a conversation with Jessica Salley Riccardi, PhD, CCC-SLP, about her research in the pediatric TBI population. Jessica is the principal investigator of the BEaR Lab (Brain Injury, Education, and Rehabilitation) and gives us a behind-the-scenes look at the questions they're seeking answers to, how this affects clinical practice, and how it might change policy in the future. She shares insightful info that SLPs can directly apply to their work today as well as considerations for the future work we have yet to do! Jessica has a deep passion and excitement for this population and shares her expertise in a way that is not only easy to understand, but that will also leave you excited to get back to your pediatric patients!

In this episode, you'll hear about:

-For SLPs, how is childhood brain injury different than adult brain injury?

-What are some of the greatest challenges in childhood brain injury for clinicians and researchers?

-How Jessica's research is contributing to SLP practice?

-How this research might contribute to policy for people with brain injury and the professionals serving them?

-Up-and-coming projects in the BEaR lab
