Asking for a Pay Rise in a Pandemic
The world is filled with uncertainty right now. There is a lot of fear, particularly around finances with the state of the world as it is. Despite what it looks like, I truly believe that each individual can still have financial autonomy and authority over their future, but only if they choose to look at it that way. To negate the fear, we must have empowering thoughts and empowering actions.
In this episode I’m going to tackle the issue of asking for a pay rise, a topic that might make some people feel uncomfortable and perhaps even fearful at the thought of it. But why? Why are we so afraid to ask for more money? The idea of having the conversation often triggers underlying fears that we all carry; fear of failure, fear of looking stupid, fear of being told no. These fears affect us in all areas of our life, not just wage negotiations, which is why it’s so important to recognise what’s going on and not let these fears hold us back.
I’m going to share my insights on this subject and give you some tips on how you can approach wage negotiations with confidence. I’ll give you some questions that you need to ask yourself and you’ll hear my thoughts on what to do when a ‘no pay rise policy’ is in place.
Statistically, women make $1m less than men over the course of their working lives. This is due to a number of factors, one being that generally speaking, women simply don’t ask for pay rises. It’s time to open up that conversation. It’s time that we take authority over our future and advocate for ourselves. And I ask you this, what is the one thing that is holding you back from asking for a pay rise?
