Trying harder is futile. Don't be the fly!
I want to share a life-changing story with you today which is the foundation of everything I do. It’s a story from my favourite book, "You Squared" by Price Pritchett, about the futility of trying harder and why sometimes, we just need to look at things from a different perspective.
We can all relate to those times in life and business when things just aren’t working. No matter how much we push ourselves to work harder, be better and grind our way through, we just keep banging our heads against the same wall. We get exhausted and discouraged, spending all our energy and resources on trying harder without pushing the needle forward.
For a lot of people, trying harder is the only solution they know. We’ve been taught not to give up, not to be weak and to just keep going when things are tough. And yes, there are times when we need to dig deep and work hard and there’s a sense of reward in doing so. But if you’ve been working harder and harder and you’re just not getting anywhere, this might be the perfect time to zoom out and find a different solution.
I've experienced burnout firsthand, spending years feeling stuck until I realised that trying harder wasn't the answer. But this isn’t just about burnout. This principle applies to any challenge you are facing or any time you want to take a leap to achieve something wonderful. When we learn to question our default mode of ‘trying harder’, we open our minds to the possibility that there might be a more effective way to achieve our goals. It’s about giving yourself permission for things to be a little easier, a little faster and done with a little less effort.
It takes courage to change course and to consider doing the opposite of what you've always done. But sometimes, that's exactly what's needed to break free from the cycle of futile effort and embrace new possibilities.
After listening to this episode, I invite you to reflect on where this pattern might be happening in your own life. What are the telltale signs that you're stuck in a cycle of trying harder but not getting results? By tuning in to your inner voice and being open to looking at things from a different view, you will discover an ease and way forward that you didn’t know was possible.
What got you here might not be the thing that will get you there. Maybe you actually need to do the opposite and you will achieve the same result without trying so hard.
