Advocates for Portage Manor have a couple of months to get a plan together that will persuade county government not to close its only publicly owned residential facility for poor and handicapped people. A group of advocates is working on plans for who will own the facility and how it will be funded. The County Council last week delayed a vote on closing Portage Manor for 60 days to give the group some time to come up with a plan.


Swiss banking giant UBS is buying rival Credit Suisse for around 3 billion dollars, reportedly about 60% less than the bank is worth in a bid to protect the country's economy and the world banking system. Credit Suisse shareholders will take the hit, after confidence in Credit Suisse collapsed last week when it admitted to poor bookkeeping that hid losses.


A frozen fruit recall involves an organic tropical fruit blend sold at Trader Joe's stores nationwide and organic strawberries sold under five different brand names including Costco's Kirkland Signature and Aldi's Simply Nature. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says there have been five cases of Hepatitis A, all in Washington state, with all five patients reportedly having eaten frozen organic strawberries.


Notre Dame women's basketball earned its way into the NCAA's Sweet 16 Sunday with a 53-48 win over Mississippi State at Purcell Pavilion. The Irish continue play this Saturday against Maryland in Greenville, South Carolina.


The Big Ten and the Atlantic Coast Conferences are down to one team each after the opening weekend of the NCAA Mens's Basketball Tournament. Michigan State represents the Big Ten after a 69-60 win over Marquette Sunday. The Spartans face Kansas State Thursday. Purdue infamously lost to 16 seed Farleigh Dickinson Friday, and Indiana bowed out in the second round last night, 85-69 against lone ACC survivor Miami.
