Suffolk Wildlife Trust – bringing nature back

April 28, 2023

With a lifelong passion for everyday nature and a champion of the joy to be found from the wildlife on your doorstep, Christine Luxton (chief executive of Suffolk Wildlife Trust) is a true inspiration when it comes to the protection and future of Suffolk’s wildlife and countryside.

In this week’s episode, Lesley Dolphin chats to Christine about our county’s nature charity – the only organisation dedicated to safeguarding Suffolk’s wildlife and countryside. From the cycling shed at the Trust’s HQ in Ashbocking, they talk not only about big news-worthy projects such as the transformation of the nature reserve at Martlesham Wilds, but also why Christine believes that nature should be more than a day out. Instead, she explains how nature can be part of our everyday and that if we make space for it, as a society we can achieve something rich and abundant. In return we’ll then benefit from the clean air and water we all desperately need.

Although Christine’s role as COE began in 2020, she has been part of the Trust for 25 years. The Trust celebrated 60 years in 2021, with staff and volunteers having saved some of the county's most important wildlife sites as nature reserves over the last six decades. A membership organisation, the Trust has 1400 volunteers around the county, but looking to the future they need more members and businesses to come on board. With a shared ambition and a will to make a change, extraordinary things are possible and Christine’s message is one of hope: by thinking global and acting local, little by little we can bring nature back.
