How Perception, Emotion Intelligence and Mindset Shape our Practice
Transforming How You See and Live
Perception is more than what we see—it’s how we interpret what we see. And we form perception based on our own experiences. For instance, perception, especially regarding parents, plays a major role in how we understand relationships, authority, love, and even our own identity.
Perception can be both empowering and limiting. This is where Emotional Intelligence (EQ) comes in. EQ isn’t just about being in touch with your feelings—it’s the ability to understand, manage, and respond to emotions—both your own and others’—with wisdom and empathy. One key principle:
Emotions are data, not directives. They inform us about what matters but do not dictate our responses.
Another critical factor is mindset, specifically the Growth vs. Fixed Mindset, a concept developed by psychologist Carol Dweck.
- Growth Mindset: Abilities can develop with effort; challenges are opportunities to learn.
- Fixed Mindset: Abilities are static; challenges are avoided to protect self-image.
For example:
- A fixed mindset might say, “I’m not good at meditating” or “This isn’t for me.”
- A growth mindset says, “I’m learning to quiet my mind” or “I’m improving each time I try.”
On the Mindful Media Episode “Meditation & The Mind: How Perception, Emotional Intelligence and Mindset Shape our Practice, we explored how psychology and meditation work together to deepen self-awareness and transformation.
