SFR 305: From Christian to Atheist

October 12, 2014

Our names are Jason Korbus and Bobby Nelson.  We are atheists.  We do not hold belief in any Gods.  But, we weren’t always nonbelievers.  In fact, we were both Christians at one point.  So, how did we go from Christian to atheist?  Listen to this episode, and find out.

–We touch on our upbringing, and how our religious beliefs were instilled in us.  From there, we talk about why and how we began to shed those beliefs, and what the consequences were for that.

–We get into popular arguments for the existence of God as well.  For instance, what else created the Universe if not for God?  And the world seems so perfectly designed…why shouldn’t we believe that God designed it for us?  Plus, what about the revelation of God through the Bible?  Don’t we get our morality from God?  All this and more is discussed.

–The topic of faith itself comes up as well.  If faith is defined as “belief in the absence of evidence,” why is it a virtue to have faith?  Shouldn’t we prefer evidence for our beliefs?  After all, aren’t there a lot of bad things that have happened because of faith?  We talk about the good and bad aspects of faith, but try to clarify that none of the good things require you to believe in the supernatural.

–Another thing we talk about is why atheists spend so much time refuting the existence of a God they don’t believe in.

–Finally, we touch on the recent disputes over how criticisms of Islam as a doctrine are conflated with bigotry against Muslims as people, and why we think this notion is completely ridiculous.

We hope this episode helped you to understand how we went “From Christian to Atheist,” but look forward to hearing your thoughts on this issue, wherever you are on the religious or non-religious scale.  Thanks for listening!
