Episode 46: Connecting the Physical and Philosophical Realms

Ron opens the episodes by asking Peter Worth to introduce himself.

  • Peter discusses his history in computer sciences, and his philosophical studies and practices, both being done simultaneously over the course of decades.
  • From that research, he has written many things and had multiple publications.

Deb then asks him what stories in his head changed over the course of all the research.

  • He discusses his history of how he got into yoga, which led him to also studying the philosophical pieces behind it.
  • Peter then discusses how these pieces shaped his view and perception of the metaphysical realm.
  • He continues by describing how this has also altered his work as a computer engineer.
  • Ron asks for clarification between the metaphysical, engineering, and physical worlds that he discussed.
  • Peter then clarifies how he holds each of those, individually and especially in relation to one another.

Deb asks him to elaborate on how these many individual pieces are coming together in his field.

  • Peter mentions how there are many philosophical ideas, but bringing them into practicality and everyday is not philosophers main focus.
  • He says computer scientists are working on bringing some of those pieces, such as how we think and process information, into the real world with tangible end results.
  • He mentions how artificial intelligence and machine learning came about and how closely those neural networks resemble the connections we find in our brains, which is how he relates these ideas back to his career.
  • Following down the same path, he makes the connections between the metaphysical realm and the physical realm.

Ron asks what and how he thinks these things will be of importance to his children, and future generations.

  • Peter says that raising his boy has altered his way of realizing how exactly we learn as humans, and the amount of effort that goes into that process.
  • He notes that while thinking critically isn’t something you start off teaching, it ends up becoming more and more important later on, as determining what is true or not is going to shape our world in the future.
  • Ron runs with one of the ideas that Peter mentions about how the methods of learning are changing very quickly.
  • Peter notes how because we live in the era of information, everything is readily available at your fingertips, which is drastically different than how it was even just a decade ago.

Ron asks Peter to think about one of the realizations he came to during the course of his research that shifted his entire world view.

  • Peter discusses some of the original texts that he read, and as he puts many of those pieces came together, they formed a nice empirical basis on how to perceive our world.
  • He talks about how the philosopher Kant was able to express ideas that people from many different backgrounds and ideologies can all agree on.
  • After prompting from Deb, he discusses his latest research publication, which talks about how believing something to be true, the fake it ‘til you make it mentality, can become the reality that you get to live in.
  • Ron comments on how this connects with the Macklin methodologies and the things they are teaching.
  • Peter and Ron continue back and forth about how these practices and ideologies are playing out in our current world, and how they directly relate to the interesting times we are all currently living through.
  • Peter mentions how the younger generations are entirely shifting their priorities and how they are choosing to live their lives.
  • Ron puts it in stark contrast to the generations of broken stories that came before.
  • Peter relates this back to the current economy that we are seeing and how businesses are struggling to adapt to the next generations as the values of the business are slow to adapt and keep pace with the rapidly changing environment.
