07-27-14 AM “Growing Old Gracefully” The Rev. Edward T. McNabb, Jr.

July 29, 2014

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. (Romans 8:28 )

In my twenties as I started in a new way to walk with the Holy Spirit into my adult life as a Christian I began to realize that some of the “youngest†people I knew were in fact some of the oldest.  I learned to see it in their eyes.  Even as nature continues to whittle us down over the years, even as a life of physical vitality diminishes, in the Body of Christ some of the people I meet seem to project a persona gaining steam not losing it.

At one point Jesus spoke to his disciples as said “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. (John 10:10 )  How does that work when your body quits growing up and starts breaking down, when tennis is no longer an option because your knees are shot, when you’ve endured and accumulated multiple losses of hopes and dreams and loves?

And why should a young person want to hear this sermon?  I’ll tell you why.  Because what I am calling Kingdom Life accumulates its own treasure.  And it’s made of the stuff that can’t be stolen or destroyed.  It’s death proof.  It’s life that is Life.  It’s life that doesn’t diminish, only grows….and grows.  Banking on a Grace full life: that’s what I’ll be talking about.
