Esp 102: Thinking Errors and Finding Mental Health, Guest Barry Pearman

March 29, 2017

The son of a sheep farmer, New Zealander, Barry Pearman has a heart for people who suffer. He's served as a pastor, a mental health worker, and a chaplain for a group of people with mental illness. Now, (among other things) he works as a gardener and runs Turning the Page which endeavors to bring mental health through spiritual formation. Barry ministers from experience because he also struggles with depression too. Hear his story, (enjoy his accent!), and get some great information for yourself or for someone who you know who is struggling with a mental health concern.

SUMMARY:
Today our discussion covers the social component of mental health issues that are too often overlooked in the care, treatment, and ministerial aspect of people with mental health challenges. We also discuss the role that the people of his "church within a church" (called The Living Room) had as they actively participated in through major roles during services (i.e. giving sermons, etc.)– even though some of them had seriously debilitating mental illness, and what happen when they did. What does this say about community and how healing works for humans and how can we make improvements in our local settings?

And finally, we go into some common "errors in thinking" that perpetuate negative ways of being, depressive moods, un-wellness, and isolation from the very helpful Resource he wrote called “Out of the Darkness"– which is available FREE at his website: http://turningthepage.info
