Eps 99: Guest Dr David Dark, Culture is Religion: We become what we love

March 01, 2017

Do you think of yourself as RELIGIOUS?

A lot of people bristle at being thought of that way. According to Pew Research Center, people in the modern Western world are more reluctant than ever to identify as religious–though many admit to being spiritual.

Dr David Dark exposes this sentiment as myopic and a misunderstanding of cultural formation. "We all drink the Kool-Aid. Religion happens," says Dark. We are bound to many beliefs and stories that shape our lives, whether they are found in a sacred text, church teachings, or in our experiences with music, books, or movies (even if they aren't about a god or gods). Even our rejection of certain religious doctrines will stay in familiar categories and enforce a religion of its own.

Our conversation today is about what makes CULTURE: the arts, music, poetry, science fiction, social media, theology, religion and more. These are what make up cultural formation. You will hear about religion in broader and more relevant ways than you may have encountered before. These ways are at the crux of what forms us as individuals and are especially potent concepts to understand as we come together in common life and society in during difficult times.
