Solar Tech Talk is back with Aaron Bingham and new co-host Tiernay Marsh! First up, it’s a brief check-in with CALSSA on the NEM 3.0 battle in California. Then, the crew is joined by SMA & BYD—who have joined forces to create their own AC battery solution—who give an in-depth look at their product’s capabilities and features. RAPID ROUNDUP (00:00): Tiernay introduces herself and her industry experience to fellow solar nerds. The gang checks in with friend of the show Carter Lavin of CALSSA to get an update on the solar policy battle in California surrounding net metering changes (NEM 3.0).

DEEP DIVE 1 (8:55): Devon WIlson of BYD and Mike Mahon of SMA America visit the show to explain the benefits of their respective systems — plus the nuances of the BYD-SMA storage standards and customer service partnership. Fans of classic SMA Sunny Boy line will want to tune in, as well as contractors selling whole-home or partial backup capability to their customers, as well as PV system upgrades. Devon and Mike also answer some frequently asked questions from customers, such as software compatibility and running batteries to zero.

DEEP DIVE 2 (33:38): Product marketing managers Ashley Marin-Golis and David Glickman from Enphase Energy stop by to chat with Tiernay and Aaron. They provide some context for the recent Enphase rebranding of their storage products, simplifying product line identities for both contractors and homeowners. There’s lots of excitement for the IQ8 microgrid-forming microinverters coming out in 2022. There are a lot of perks for home energy resilience, designing storage systems around tight spaces, and getting homeowners started with battery storage at a lower price point.

Tiernay is in love with the western US and will happily take the opportunity for a road trip – especially if it takes her close to a mountain to climb, a canyon to rappel, and/or a forest or desert to explore. When staying put, she enjoys snuggling with her pup, reading a good book, and searching for the perfect bowl of ramen.
