GHOST IN THE SHELL - a metaphor for our relationship with stories

March 30, 2017

WARNING: Mild spoilers for GitS to follow Andy Farnsworth and Tysen Webb are joined by guest Fanboy Aaron Zundel to discuss Scarlett Johansson's latest: GHOST IN THE SHELL.  It's a live-action remake of a beloved Japanese anime comic and movie series from the 1990s. Andy says you shouldn't worry about spoilers for this movie since those who are fans already know the story and everyone else might benefit from a little background going into the movie. Aaron actually did a paper on "Ghost in the Shell" for a college class years ago and brings a perspective on the story that Tysen & Andy do not have.  The discussion eventually evolves into how we feel when a story we loved in another medium gets transferred to the big screen; and how it parallels some of the metaphysical questions explored in "Ghost in the Shell". GHOST IN THE SHELL stars Scarlett Johansson as Major; Pilou Asbæk as Batou; Takeshi Kitano as Aramaki; Juliette Binoche as Dr. Ouelet; Michael Pitt as Kuze; Peter Ferdinando as Cutter and Anamaria Marinca as Dr. Dahlin.  It is directed by Rupert Sanders and based on a story by Masamune Shirow
