‘Welcome to Marwen’ & The Psychology of Trauma

December 14, 2018

Steve Carrell's upcoming film, Welcome to Marwen explores the real-life story where a man, Mark Hogancamp, is the victim of a random act of violence that leaves him with severe memory loss and PTSD upon waking from his coma.

Hogancamp, played by Carrell, was unable to afford therapy, so he found a coping alternative in creating a diorama village, known as Marwencol. Our panel of Shrinks breaks down the psychology of trauma, PTSD, and post-traumatic growth.

"It's interesting that trauma has historically been affected by culture."

Being Human
In our Being Human segment, the Shrink Tank Podcast panelists discuss some of the latest findings on psychology in the news.
After trauma, many people have the sense that the trauma has changed them for the better. This line of thinking has led to the birth of the phenomenon known as post-traumatic growth.

However, there are very few studies that have assessed people prior to a trauma and then re-assessed them afterwards to see if positive change has actually occurred. There is a new study in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships to apply this prospective design.

Our panel of Shrinks discusses this and more in today's Being Human. Read the article that inspired the discussion here.
