Pierce County is the second-largest county in Washington State. Its largest city, Tacoma, is about 33 miles South of Seattle.

The largest public employer in Pierce County is the military at Joint Base Lewis McChord. In the 1970’s the population included a lot of young, single men that the Carbone gang liked to take advantage of.

They called themselves The Enterprise. But, Carbone’s crew got, how should we say, a little too big for its britches. How else to explain what would come next: a civil servant shot four times, point blank, right in front of his family.

And he wasn’t the only one who would be targeted for knowing too much.
