92: Leaving a Cult with Jen Kiaba
Today’s show is sponsored by ignitedwoman.com by Irene Fehr – the modern woman’s guide to soulful sexuality
Have you ever imagined what it would feels like to be born and raised within a cult? Unification Church, a religious movement the general media considers as a cult, is the home of today’s guest for the first 20 years of her life.
For the cult members, being born into this church means that you are part of the perfect generation who are born without original sin; that you will grow up to be a sinless, perfect individual; that you are part of a pure blood lineage and to marry outside of the church will contaminate the pure blood; that if you ever leave the confines of the church, you will be invaded by evil spirits. These are some of the values and ideologies believed by the cult members.
Can you imagine growing up, believing all these are the right way to live?
I’m happy to have Jen Kiaba with me today as the guest for today’s episode. Jen is part of the cult’s perfect generation mentioned above. She is one of the children that has been born and raised within the Unification Church. Fortunately, she is now free from the influence of the cult and now bravely shares her story with the rest of the world. Jen currently work as a fine art photographer and a digital marketing educator.
During our interview, Jen talked about her story and her experience growing up in a cult, including:
* How she felt growing up in a cult, including the ideas and values she was raised to believe in
* How she started to question the cult’s beliefs, such as arranged marriage among cult members and also the church’s confinement rules
* How she started to challenge those beliefs by trusting her own instincts and believing who she really should be
* How she felt about the life, the experience and the relationships in the “Outside world”, after leaving the cult
* How she thinks her life would be like if she had not said yes to leaving the cult
