My name is Aaron and I’ll be your host on this journey.
You might say I came to all of this naturally. It’s a topic and area of study that has fascinated me since I was a little kid growing up on the Gulf of Mexico watching hurricanes and floods like the one that decimated New Orleans.
But my real story starts in my mid-twenties. I worked as an architectural intern for a huge energy company in their facilities management department. As you might imagine, energy companies spend tons of time focusing on how to keep their plants and operations humming no matter what and unauthorized people out. Everyone is depending on them to keep the lights on, after all.
While there I was asked to sit on a very small committee. Our mission was war-gaming the most insidious of scenarios. Then we’d work through how to protect our facilities and staff, and by proxy whole states that relied on us for power.
The experience gave me an usual awareness of how fragile things can be. And a year later, on September 11th, I watched one of our nightmare scenarios play out live on TV.
I’ve also gone on to get training in emergency medical, FEMA’s Community Emergency Response Team, hundreds of hours on more tactical endeavors with former swat, secret service, and retired special forces members; and acquired all sorts of skills to survive just about anything.
Since then I’ve immersed myself further in the field and shared with large audiences all over the world about the things we can do in our personal lives. You see, I’ve learned something very important I’m going to share with you here.
We can’t guard against everything always. But we can do a lot. And it all starts with individuals at home.
