Deepest Desires: The Resurrection and the Life

The resurrection of Jesus Christ is both a historical event and a present reality that offers new life. Jesus was crucified, buried, and on the third day, He rose—not as a ghost or a symbol, but in a real, physical, resurrected body. The stone was not rolled away so He could get out, but so others could see in—death is defeated, and sin has lost its grip.
In John 11, the account of Lazarus illustrates that Jesus doesn’t merely bring resurrection—He is resurrection. When Martha expresses belief in a future resurrection, Jesus responds, “I am the resurrection and the life” (John 11:25), showing that resurrection is not only a future hope but a present encounter with Him. Though Lazarus was dead four days, Jesus calls him out, demonstrating His power over death and His intention to bring people not just back to life, but into a new kind of life.
The restoration of Peter in John 21 further reveals what resurrection life means. Though Peter denied Jesus, the risen Christ meets him on the shore and asks three times, “Do you love Me?”—followed by the command, “Feed My sheep” (John 21:17). Peter is not only forgiven; he is recommissioned.
This message challenges each listener to consider whether they are merely breathing or truly living. Jesus calls people out of their graves—out of fear, shame, and regret—not just to survive, but to live fully alive in Him.
As you reflect on this message this week, consider the following:
- Are you living in the truth that Jesus is presently the resurrection and the life, or are you only hoping for Him to act in the future?
- What “grave clothes” might still be clinging to your life—habits, fears, regrets—that need to be removed in the context of Christian community?
- Have you allowed past failure, like Peter’s denial, to define your identity, or have you accepted Christ’s invitation to restoration and renewed purpose?
