Deep Desires: The True Vine

April 13, 2025

John 15 teaches that flourishing in life requires a living connection with Jesus, the true vine. Pastor Carl taught that being spiritually disconnected is not simply being lost. It means being exposed to fear, confusion, and the works of the enemy. He said, “Disconnected from God, we’re not just lost. We’re on our own and vulnerable to the enemy’s works.”

The sermon included the story of Hiroo Onoda, a Japanese soldier who remained in hiding for 29 years after World War II ended. Although the war was over, he lived in isolation, believing a lie. He was alive but not free. This illustrated how people can live in survival mode, cut off from peace, clarity, and the life Jesus offers.

Jesus said, “I am the vine, you are the branches; the one who remains in Me, and I in him bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing” (John 15:5). Pastor Carl emphasized that fruitfulness comes through connection. Remaining in Jesus means obeying His commands and living in His love. “Our joy doesn’t just come from our connection from Jesus, but with each other.”

The message concluded with a call to stay connected to Jesus, to the church, and to other believers. This kind of connection brings lasting fruit, stability in difficult seasons, and the joy that comes from a life led by the Spirit.

As you reflect on this message this week, consider the following:

  1. Fruitfulness in the Christian life is not achieved through effort alone but through sustained connection to Jesus. Are you remaining in Him, or are you operating in your own strength?

  2. Onoda’s story shows how people can live in a false reality for years. In what ways might you be holding onto a version of the past that Jesus has already set you free from?

  3. Remaining in Christ includes remaining in community. Are you cultivating meaningful relationships in the body of Christ that reflect His love and help you bear lasting fruit?
