“Knowing how to experience time as a gift is one of the primary challenges of modern life. We are tempted to forget our history and the inheritance that we have received from those who have preceded us. We project our anxieties and our dreams into a future that doesn’t exist yet. And we constantly seek new ways to reshuffle the events and encounters of our day in order to cram more stuff into our waking hours. But these strategies, as we have seen, often cause us to make decisions that are foolish, and they cause our lives to feel harried.”
