This is Renegade Files Episode 79, Vigilante Justice.

Since there have been laws and systems of justice, there have been flaws and cracks in these systems. Sometimes the innocents go to jail, and sometimes the criminals get away. A Vigilante is someone who acts unofficially, and outside of the establishments of law enforcement and criminal prosecution, to deliver what they believe to be justice, in situations where the legal system, in the vigilante’s eyes, fails to do the right thing.

Some vigilantes are seen as heroes, others are seen as reckless dangers to society, and some divide opinions and create camps of both supporters and critics of their actions.

On this episode of Renegade Files we will travel down the back alleys and desolate woodland roads in search of vigilante justice. We will try to understand some of the circumstances which drive people to take the law into their own hands, and we will delve into four specific cases and groups who have defined the modern vigilantes: Gary Plauché, Bernhard Goetz, The Guardian Angels, and Daniel Penny.

Is there a time when everyone agrees that a vigilante has done the right thing? Do some deserve medals? Do all deserve jail cells? And in the end, what does it say about our society as a whole, when the wheels of justice force certain, otherwise law abiding citizens over the edge to take actions that make them criminals themselves?

It is not my style to delve into graphic or disturbing details, however, the basic facts of some of these cases may be disturbing nonetheless.
