Anger - Recovered 1022

August 20, 2019

Addiction recovery almost always involves dealing with anger. Anger may be directed at oneself, at specific people, or society as a whole. Without learning to process anger in a constructive manner, a person with an addiction cannot move forward in recovery. Abstinence is prescribed for people addicted to drugs and alcohol. So, should alcoholics give up having ambition and setting goals? No. Ambition is not bad. We need to have a healthy relationship with ambition just as we need healthy relationships with all our desires. Whether you hold anger inside or lash out at others, if it is not dealt with properly, numerous roadblocks can stand in the way of moving forward with your recovery. Unprocessed anger can result in further legal problems, more serious physical health problems, and general de-celeration of the process of working a recovery program. What comes first to mind? Why is anger bad for your recovery? When is anger good? When do you know when anger is good? When you were new, what were you most angry about? How did anger play a role in your addiction? Today, what makes you angry? How does the program help with your anger? What is usually the underlying emotion when you are angry? How do you deal with “good” anger? What triggers anger in you? How do the following most trigger your anger? Perfectionism Feeling unloved Feeling being taken advantage of Feeling misunderstood Helpless feelings Criticism Exhaustion Feelings of being treated unfairly What recovery tools help? ______________________________________________________ We asked our listeners about this topic.
