Episode 166: Rats! We’re Rats! We’re the Rats! (World Rat Day)
They’re feared by elephants yet fancied by its breeders and fans. They’re scorned for carrying diseases yet appreciated for detecting them. They’re considered offensive and selfish, yet some consider them clean and sociable.
They are the rats, and today we’re celebrating World Rat Day, in honor of these fascinating creatures of science and society. For a time, rats were thought to be terrible and offensive because of religion and The Black Plague; they even had a sport of filling a pit with rats and betting on which dog can kill the rats the fastest. Fortunately, thanks to the breeders of this sport, rats became domesticated (known as fancy rats) and were collected by fans for their unique fur colors and patterns.
This week, we’re playing tracks from video games that have rats: a tournament of furry fighters, a world under attack by a once sealed demon, and a kingdom on a warpath with other kingdoms. There’s also covers and remixes of these original tracks to follow.
Have a good listen to these tracks as you ponder on the idea of adopting a fancy rat for a pet…
