What the Hell Are You?

August 27, 2015

This is the premiere episode of our "Short Ends" segments: stand-alone mini radio documentaries, discussions or narrative readings about all things cinema. These are usually topics that don't fit within the context of the main show.
This week we look at "what we filmmakers call ourselves."
Names mean things. A name can immediately convey information about your race, gender, socio-economic background, whether or not your parents were permanently high in the 60s… In his book “How to Win Friends and Influence People,” Dale Carnegie suggests that you speak a person’s name when addressing them because it is one of the sweetest sounds to their ears.
Because names have such a profound impact on how people perceive us, it stands to reason that the professional titles we have are equally, if not more poignant. Nowhere is that fact more prevalent, and at times as hotly debated or discussed, as among filmmakers (or videograhers, or video producers or… well, I think you see where I’m going with this).
In this episode of “Short Ends”, we look at how some filmmakers call (or don’t call) themselves, why, and whether it even matters.
