Up + Adam with Adam Montiel
Veteran's Day w/ Purple Heart Recipient & WWII Vet Dick Grantham
In this special Veterans Day episode of Up+Adam, we honor the life and legacy of World War II veteran Richard “Dick” Grantham. A Quartermaster who served in some of the Pacific’s fiercest battles, Dick carried the weight of a nation’s courage through war and peace. He was awarded the Purple Heart for his heroic efforts aboard the USS Dupage, where he survived a devastating attack and later served in pivotal battles at Leyte Gulf, Okinawa, and beyond.
Adam first met Dick in 2021 when he shared his story with me at a Veterans' dinner Adam hosted, and his quiet strength left a lasting impression. Almost a year later, his family invited Adam into his home to capture his story one last time—what no one knew though, it would be just hours before he passed away. His voice was frail, his breaths labored, yet his spirit was unbroken.
In this episode, we listen to Dick’s final words, honoring a man who gave everything for his country and shared his last moments to remind us of the power of sacrifice.
As we honor Dick’s memory, let us also remember the countless men and women who’ve served and continue to serve, standing as quiet heroes who protect our freedoms every day. To each of you, thank you.
