Gaining Trust Through Podcasting - Saving Your Voice
In today’s show (episode 378) we explain how podcasting does boost your influence to get your message out and/or grow your business by building trust. For the experienced podcast we have tips saving your voice. We also talk about Skype software issues, the podcast patent troll, and how long should your podcast be?

The Importance of Trust[5:45]
You can build trust with your podcast. How?
1. By producing content on a regular content you are seen as reliable
2. By producing quality content, you are seen as a valuable asset.
3. By sharing about yourself, you connect with your audience.
THE RESULT: You are a trusted friend who delivers great content on a regular basis. Compare that to the person you found through a Google search, who would you buy from? Which message would you believe? Who would you be more moved to help spread the word about their business.
I play a clip from the Dave Ramsey Show called The EntreLeadership Podcast where he interviews Seth Godin. Seth states that people pay with their money, their trust, and referrals.
I tweak this for podcasting and say your podcast listener pays with their time, attention, and trust.
They give their time to consume your content.
They give you their attention to actually consume it (this is the difference between hearing and listening).
They trust you to give them engaging content that will move them.
If you waster their time, by giving them horrible content, the chance of you earning your trust is facing a very rough road.
Gaining Customer’s Trust
I am amazed at the number of people who never blink at giving me their logins to different accounts (Godaddy, Hostgator, etc). I wouldn’t be offended if they said, “Can you show me how to do it?” They don’t. They trust me. I also had a client who I had set up their WordPress for them. They had me do a second website for them, and when I asked for their login and password they stated that they had never changed it from when I first set it up. It shows that they trust me with their passwords (they easily could change it after I’m done setting up their site).
Seth Godin and Dave Ramesy Books
I’m a big fan of Tribes: We Need You to Lead Us from Seth Godin, and I Love the The Total Money Makeover: A Proven Plan for Financial Fitness. Dave has a podcast about personal finances
and his Entreleadship podcast is based on his book by the same nameEntreLeadership: 20 Years of Practical Business Wisdom from the Trenches .Seth Godin has his Start Up School Podcast.
Taking Care of Your Voice With Erik K Johnson the Podcast Talent Coach [15:50]
Back again is my friend Erik K Johnson who is someone with a radio background (he’s been in the top 2 in his market for over 10 years) and is (in my opinion) one of the few radio people who “get” podcasting and understand the difference between radio and podcast. I highly recommend Erik’s Podcast Talent Coach podcast.
His website is www.podcasttalentcoach.com and www.erikkjohnson.com
While I realized podcasting in global, here in Ohio its starting to get cold. We are approaching “Cold and Flu” season. I always worry about getting sick in the Winter. With Fall upon us I wanted to plan ahead and see what I could do to take care of my voice.
1. Warm up your voice. You don’t have to sing, but get the vocal chords warmed up. If you skip this, you might strain your voice.
2. Talk from your diaphragm
3. Avoid sugar drinks (soda).
4. Gargle with salt water (if your voice is in bad shape)
5. Avoid caffeinated drinks
6. Drink plenty of room temperature water (cold water can shrink your vocal chords).
7. Wear a hat (Mom was right). To help avoid a cold.
One of the things you can do to make sure you don’t miss a show is to have a few shows recorded with “ever green” content. Then if you can’t talk, you can use one of these shows.
Check out Erik’s Podcast Talent Coach Workbook to help you shape your podcasting into engaging content. I’ve read it, and it really gets you thinking about your content.
Last Five in Five with Paul Colligan [41:00]
Today’s Last five in five comes from Paul Colligan’s Thinking Out Loud podcast.
In a shout out to Dave Jackson’s School Of Podcasting and his “Last 5 In 5″ concept, I decided to share, quickly, the last 5 Podcasts that I listened to. Here they are – Dave Jackson’s “School Of Podcasting,” Dave Ramsey’s “EntreLeadership,” Merlin Mann and Dan Benjamin’s “Back 2 Work,” Amy Porterfield’s “Online Marketing Made Easy” and Christopher Penn and John Wall’s “Marketing Over Coffee.”

Skype API Cuts Out Software Recorders [45:25]
Skype announced that as of December 2013 they will cut off access to software that use their API. At this point I know this means Pamela (for the PC), but as for titles like Call recorder and Powergramo, the jury is still out. The cool thing is that ALL podcasters are trying to find the answer to this questions (in many cases waiting for support teams to get back to us) and we are all sharing this information together. One great resource is the Google+ Podcasters community where we share opinions and insights (and try not to “HEY COME LISTEN TO MY PODCAST” to each other).
Per their twitter account Call Recorder on the Mac seems to be OK.
The Best Way To Record Skype
THE Best way to record skype is to NOT use software, but to use a portable recorder. This way no matter what happens to skype you are good to go. This videos show you how.
What’s The Best Length For a Podcast?
I get this question all the time. My answer is there is no too long, only too boring. It depends on your audience. For example a podcast for truckers could be hours long and be fine. I personally like about 20 minutes, and many people choose this as stats say this is the average commute. I noticed that Paul said he as “half way” through the show. This leads to me believe that the show may be too long (it was shorter in the past). When in doubt ASK your audience (which is what I’m doing here).
How do you like the length of the show?
Too Short
Just Right
Too Long
