2023 June 18 - Saturn's Northern Hexagon

June 18, 2023

In today's image, we see the north polar region of Saturn as imaged by the Cassini spacecraft. The polar hexagon was first seen by the voyager craft in the 1980s and is apparently unique to Saturn. It is unusual in its regularity and how well-defined it is. In addition, most shapes on planets tend to be oval or circular so a six-sided shape is quite unusual.
