2023 May 27 - Crescent Neptune and Triton

May 27, 2023

In today's image, we see Neptune and its large moon Triton as timed by the Voyager 2 spacecraft back in 1989. Voyager 2 is the only spacecraft to have visited the outermost planet in the solar system. In order to see an object as a crescent, one needs to have traveled out beyond that object and be able to look back toward the Sun.
