2023 May 22 - Supernova in Nearby Spiral Galaxy M101

In today's image, we seethe supernova recently discovered in the spiral galaxy M101. This is an example of a Type II supernova which occurs at the end of the life of a massive star. Being able to study one that occurs nearby allows us to better study and improve our models of how such supernovae occur.
