2023 January 18 - MACS0647: Gravitational Lensing in the Early Universe by Webb

January 18, 2023

In today's image, we see the lensing of a distant group of galaxies by a foreground cluster. Three different images of these galaxies are formed as light travels through the region of space distorted by the cluster of galaxies. From Hubble, only a single object was able to be seen. However, the more powerful Webb Telescope is able to resolve this into two or more galaxies dating back to the early history of the universe only a few hundred million years after the Big Bang.
