Pediatric Sports Medicine Podcast
The AMSSM Position Statement on Mental Health
Sports medicine professionals interact with athletes daily, many of whom have some underlying mental health issue. Commonly this may be anxiety or depression. We know that many athletes don’t feel comfortable disclosing their mental health issues or concerns or often they may go undiagnosed for long periods of time. They can affect athletic performance and the symptoms of many mental health issues may masquerade themselves as other medical problems leading to a delayed diagnosis and treatment. Today on the podcast we are going to discuss the recently released position statement from the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, or AMSSM, about Mental Health in the Athlete.
All of these things are things to consider. Today on the podcast, I have a very special guest to me. My son. He suffered a sports injury his sophomore year which led to a significant acute decline in his mental health. We are going to discuss his experiences and his story.
