How to get back an accidentally closed browser tab

April 28, 2014

You’re on the internet, maybe doing some research, and keeping track of a few different things in various tabs in your browser of choice (probably Chrome or Firefox, maybe even Internet Explorer).  You go to click on one of the tabs, and you accidentally click the little “X” at the right edge, and of course the tab closes.  Quick, what do you do?

First you panic, of course!  But that shouldn’t last too long, because there is an easy solution to this problem.

Just hold down the Ctrl and Shift keys, and tap the letter T.  There’s your tab back right where it was before!

This has happened to me a few times, and it was before I knew this trick, so it was pretty frustrating.  I actually looked around for a browser plugin that restores accidentally deleted tabs (and there are some available – they just aren’t necessary when you know this secret).

This works in Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer.  Maybe others, but I haven’t tried it in the other ones.
