Ian Brennan – Music From Tigray, Ethiopia “Tigray Tears”

August 10, 2025

Ian Brennan and Marilena Umuhoza Delli travel the world making field recordings of traditional music, much of it in danger of being lost forever. With 50 albums to their credit, Tigray Tears – The World Stood By is the most recent.

Ian joins Baruch in a conversation about the Tigray region of Ethiopia, the people, the music, all in the context of the 2020 – 2022 civil war “that was primarily fought in the Tigray Region of Ethiopia between forces allied with the Ethiopian federal government and Eritrea on one side, and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front on the other.”  – Wikipedia

This record is a series of pleas for peace, civility, and kindness. Ian talks about the making of the record and his life as an ethnomusicologist; his motivations and what’s rewarding about doing this work.
