Keepsakes and Technology

Designer Karol Munoz's new innovation, Luma Legacy, is inspired by a time-honored tradition.

Karol, who is Luma Legacy's co-founder and CEO, has created a "smart" charm bracelet.  Wearers can share pictures and stories.

Karol's twenty-first century update is based on classic jewelry, such as lockets, that incorporated photographs.  But Luma Legacy takes that concept several steps further.

An app allows the uploading of audio, video--and, yes, photographs--to bracelet charms.

Recently, Karol graduated from  Make in LA's second startup training session.   (Make in LA is Los Angeles' first hardware accelerator!)

Make in LA's program spans four months.  Unsurprisingly, the admission process is highly competitive.  Each "semester" ends with a graduation ceremony: "Hardware Demo Day".

At this June's ceremony, at Van Nuys Airport, four different maker/entrepreneur teams exhibited, and pitched, their creations.  Prospective investors were listening--and connecting.

After the presentations, Karol talked about creating  Luma Legacy, some of the exciting developments since she first came up with the design, and her advice to fellow entrepreneurs.
On this episode of Over Coffee®, you'll hear:

How Luma Legacy connects stories to jewelry;

How Karol first came to design her "smart" bracelet;

The market research she and her team conducted, that inspired the design;

The upcoming plans for new Luma Legacy charms;

The date of their upcoming launch;

How the charm designs are evolving;

A memorable lesson Karol learned while pitching her product;

The reasons behind the age demo (15-24) to which her bracelets are geared;

Karol's background and how it led her to think in terms of disruptive technology;

The resources she recommends to fellow female entrepreneurs.

One of Karol's favorite experiences during her time in Make in LA's startup training program;

A resulting exercise that may help entrepreneurs stop thinking about work, for at least a few minutes!

Are you a maker/entrepreneur?  Make in LA is currently accepting applications for their third Hardware Accelerator Class.  The deadline is August 1, 2016, and classes start on September 26, according to their website.  Here's the link for more information.
