For centuries tents functioned as mobile palaces, providing domestic space and ceremonial stage settings reinforcing the power of the Padishah. Considering the material remains of fabric imperial architecture opens new avenues for exploring and understanding Ottoman visual culture and architectural history. Beyond the Empire, Ottoman tents changed hands as war booty and spolia during conflicts with neighboring polities, which resulted in a rich afterlife for many of these objects.
