Hello everyone! Welcome to Take 12: Find your life’s passion. How Alfredo Corchado’s love of Mexico turned into an addiction for journalism.
In this episode, we’ll hear the inspiring story of journalist and published author, Alfredo Corchado.
Born in Mexico, Alfredo migrated with his family to the United States when he was still a child. They settled in the San Joaquin Valley, California. He grew up working in the fields, without a break, and without clean drinking water.
As an immigrant farm worker, Alfredo didn’t really aspire to go to California’s renown universities. He became a high school dropout and daydreamed about being a songwriter like Juan Gabriel. Inspired by the movie Shampoo, he even considered becoming a hair stylist. But it was his mother’s drive to give her children a better life, what eventually pushed Alfredo to finish school. He moved to Texas and enrolled at the University of Texas at El Paso.
Alfredo wanted to go back to Mexico to look at what he had left behind. He wanted to embrace his roots, his culture, and his language. He discovered that becoming a journalist and working as a correspondent in Mexico City, would be the best vehicle to do that.

As an American journalist working in Mexico, Alfredo has seen many of his Mexican colleagues being silenced or killed. He has himself received death threats. But nothing has stopped him from covering stories with excellence. His passion for journalism has made him a witness to history in the making. He lives journalism. He dreams journalism. It is a disease and there is no way to cure it.
