On a Monday night Ochelli Effect we revisited the remarkable African American historical figure Theodore Roosevelt Mason “T. R. M.” Howard (March 4, 1908 – May 1, 1976).
This time we are pleased to be able to present both authors of the book T. R. M. Howard: Doctor, Entrepreneur, Civil Rights Pioneer.
The striking contrast between the exigent dynamic person and nearly uncontemplated impact of TRM Howard’s life and times in literature that often focuses on many other leaders in African American history make this book a must-read for anyone who wishes to fully appreciate the progress and lack-there-of regarding American Civil Rights in the 20th century. It has the added benefit of being an inspirational and atypical story of a man confronted with hostile circumstances, and his work ethics which caused to incite change by confronting adversity with intelligence and conviction.

About the Authors:
-David T. Beito- is a Research Fellow at the Independent Institute and Professor of History at the University of Alabama. He received his Ph.D. in history at the University of Wisconsin, and he is the recipient of the Ellis Hawley Prize. Professor Beito is the author of Taxpayers in Revolt: Tax Resistance during the Great Depression, From Mutual Aid to the Welfare State: Fraternal Societies and Social Services, 1890-1967, and T.R.M. Howard: Doctor, Entrepreneur, and Civil Rights Pioneer (with Linda Royster Beito).
Former President of the Alabama Scholars Association and Chair of the Alabama State Advisory Committee of the United States Commission on Civil Rights, Professor Beito is the Founder of the “Liberty and Power” blog at the History News Network.
An urban and social historian, Professor Beito has published in the Journal of Southern History, Journal of Policy History, Journal of Interdisciplinary History, Journal of Urban History, The Independent Review, Nevada Historical Society Quarterly, Journal of Firearms and Public Policy, and other scholarly journals.
