#07 The Macho Gospel -Good News for Manly Men! -Podcast

August 24, 2013

The Macho Gospel is calling all men to rise up and follow the manliest man who ever lived: Jesus!

In this episode of Now is the Time I talk about what it means to be a man and a follower of Jesus Christ. I also share a story about how I got a bloody nose in the store parking lot late one night!

What is the Macho Gospel?

Becoming a follower of Jesus doesn’t mean you have to deplete yourself of testosterone and sit quietly on the pew with your hands folded for the rest of your life.

The macho Gospel is a call to all men to become manly as they obey and follow the greatest man, who is Jesus Christ!

I use the word “macho” in the sense of “manly”.  God created men to be men. He gave us a role to fulfill in Christ. Following Jesus is manly because you are following a man who has proved himself in every aspect to be the ultimate man!

It is a call to action

Jesus did more than he said, he spent most of his life as a common worker, he healed, he helped, he taught, he traveled, he walked on water. Jesus was a survivalist who made it 40 days in the wilderness with no food, Bear Grylls has nothing on Jesus!

It is a call to fight evil

Let’s not forget how Jesus pulled out his whip, turned over tables and cleared the temple courts. (Mar 11:15-19) Jesus was passionate about the holiness of God and was ready to fight for it!

It is a call to protect the helpless

What can be more manly than defending and helping those who can’t help themselves? Jesus came to the aid of the prostitute in John 8:7. He didn’t go with the culturally correct answer but rather condemned those who had power and influence and in doing so saved a woman’s life. That took a more guts than most men have these days!

A call to fix what’s broken

When I was growing up I always knew that if something broke, my dad could fix it. He used to tell us, “If I can’t fix it then it ain’t broke!” Real men know how to fix things and they’re always at work making things better, stronger and more useful.

Jesus is the ultimate fixer! He came to a broken world and provided a solution with his own life! Men who follow Jesus will follow his example of mending lives and repairing broken hearts!

Questions: What other examples of manliness do you see in the Life of Jesus? Why do you think that there is a misconception of what it means to be a man in the church?
