Unconstitutional? President Barack Obama to head UN Security Council
President Barack Obama to head United Nations Security Council?
President Barack Obama is the leader of the most influential nation in the world, the USA. But when his final term as President comes to an end in early 2017, what will he do next?Become the leader of the most influential organization in the world, if all goes according to plan. Many have been musing on the possibility of President Barack Obama putting his name forward for the role of United Nations Secretary-General as early as 2010, during his first term in the White House. What does the Secretary-General actually do?The Secretary-General acts as the spokesperson and leader of the United Nations. As the head of the Security Council, they also have the power to impose international sanctions and authorize military action. However, the history of the United Nations has never seen a United States President take the top spot at United Nations Security Council.Typically it goes to someone like an ambassador, and is chosen on a regional rotation basis. And it just so happens the rotating chairmanship of the council goes to the United States next.Normal process would have Ambassador Susan Rice fill the position. But President Barack Obama has put himself forward for the role instead.Surely this is unconstitutional? A conflict of interest? An abuse of power?Section 9 of the United States Constitution states “No title of nobility shall be granted by the United States: and no person holding any office of profit or trust under them, shall, without the consent of the Congress, accept of any present, emolument, office, or title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince or foreign state.”So it seems President Barack Obama has decided to disregard the United States Constitution as well as Congress. This doesn’t seem to be the first time either.Presidential hopeful Senator Ted Cruz is one of many eyeing up President Barack Obama’s job. Cruz has said that his first act as President will be to quash every single action, change or decision of President Barack Obama that was unconstitutional or illegal.Cruz states that the proper process for creating law in the United States is not based on just the President’s individual opinion and command.Rather, it is implemented by passing new legislation through Congress that is then signed into official law.Obama’s reign as President will likely come to an end in January 2017, conveniently around the same time Ban Ki-moon, the current Secretary-General of the Security Council, finishes his post.
