Pursuing Joy in Humility

October 20, 2024

Pursuing humility means

Not having too much confidence in the flesh

“Further, my brothers and sisters, rejoice in the Lord! It is no trouble for me to write the same things to you again, and it is a safeguard for you. Watch out for those dogs, those evildoers, those mutilators of the flesh. For it is we who are the circumcision, we who serve God by his Spirit, who boast in Christ Jesus, and who put no confidence in the flesh — though I myself have reasons for such confidence. If someone else thinks they have reasons to put confidence in the flesh, I have more” Philippians 3:1-4 NIV

Not focusing too much on status

“…circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to the law, a Pharisee; as for zeal, persecuting the church; as for righteousness based on the law, faultless. But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ” Philippians 3:1-4 NIV

Not focusing too much on worldly things

“What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things.” Philippians 3:8 NIV

Not identifying as citizens of this world

But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.” Philippians 3:18-20 NIV

Finding joy in humility means

  • We will be given forgiveness for our past

  • We will inherit great riches in heaven

  • We will be exalted

  • We will see the greatness of God’s power

  • We will be trusted with great responsibility

To be GREAT, you must be LEAST (Matthew 20:25-28)

To be STRONG, you must be WEAK (2 Corinthians 12:7-10)

To be WISE, you must be a FOOL (1 Corinthians 3:18-20)

To RECEIVE, you must GIVE (Luke 6:38)

To FIND your life, you must LOSE (Matthew 16:24-25)
