Prayer, A Sharing Between Friends
“Contemplative prayer [oracion mental] in my opinion is nothing else than a close sharing between friends; it means taking time frequently to be alone with him who we know loves us.” St. Teresa of Avila
Contemplative Prayer
What is contemplative prayer? (Catechism of the Catholic Church, #2709-19)
- the prayer of the child of God
- the poor and humble surrender to the loving will of the Father in ever deeper union with his beloved Son
- the simplest expression of the mystery of prayer
- a gift, a grace; it can be accepted only in humility and poverty
- a covenant relationship established by God within our hearts
- an intense time of prayer
- a gaze of faith, fixed on Jesus; “I look at him and he looks at me,” said a farmer to St. John Vianney
- a focus on Jesus; a renunciation of self; His gaze purifies our heart
- hearing the Word of God; the Father speaking to us his incarnate Word
- silence where the Spirit of adoption enables us to share in the prayer of Jesus
- a communion of love bearing Life for the multitude

Psalm 42:7-9
Pray with Psalm 42, and listen to what God wants you to know. Spen 10 to 20 minutes in quiet and then, write down your thoughts and feelings from your prayer time.
