Nialler9 Podcast: Problematic Favourites

December 06, 2018

The weekly Nialler9 Podcast presented by Niall and Andrea ignores our regular programming to delve deep into the idea of problematic favourites.

First we look at just-announced lineups from Longitude and Primavera and share let the algorithm determine not only our listening habits but our podcast content by sharing our own Spotify Wrapped stats.

Then, we delve deep into one of the themes of music in 2018 - problematic favourites. Whether you can separate the art from the artist when it comes to music, lyrics, intention, personal lives and pop culture. Whether it's The 1975's Matty Healy speaking about the lack of misogyny in rock'n'roll while negging women on their acclaimed album, whether it's Anderson .Paak's crass blowjob skit on new album Oxnard, whether Pusha T's drug-slinging King Push personality is the art or the artist and what it says about the listener, if anything. Can you enjoy music from people who have been revealed to have done or been accused of awful things: be it XXXTentacion, Hookworms, Louis CK or Michael Jackson. Do artist have a duty to be role models? How do we decide we are OK with one artist but not OK with another?

Closing song: Mount Alaska - Asterisk
