Taking care of yourself in your 40s: Kate Turner: 235

April 13, 2021

Are you approaching your 40s or in your 40s and finding that your needs are changing in regards to your overall health?

Today we have Kate Turner on the show.  Having 8 years of experience in the nutrition field she has a passion for helping women feel their best. I wanted to have Kate share with us her thoughts on what women can do approaching their 40s to have optimal health.  If you are already in your 40s don't worry we have you covered as well!  So let's start with your mid to late 30s, there are few key things to focus on and even if you are in your 40s it's not too late.  Kate shares with us metabolism decreases 5-10% every decade, and that we need to make sure to eat enough, many women are restricting too much, meal skipping, and reducing their calorie intake.  Here is the kicker, if you are not consuming enough its slows your metabolism down even more,  and then your body thinks its going into starvation mode. We need to be very protective of our metabolism, it's hard to get it back if we keep doing yo-yo dieting.  Kate also explains that it's important to consume enough protein and how it helps your metabolism and muscle preservation.  She emphasizes that we can start to lose muscle mass around 40 and we want to make sure we are supporting our muscle so that we don't lose it but are still be able to gain muscle, for those of you that don't know this the more muscle you have the more you burn! So we want to be able to add muscle not only for weight loss but to keep our bodies strong. Also, adding collagen to your diet and why it's so important and how it helps joints, our skin and gut health and when our gut is healthy it helps our immune system and weight management. We talked about why sleep is so important for your health and  it helps you to reach your nutrition goals and how our hormones reset while sleeping.  One thing that stood out to me is in order to feel the most rested you need to be sleeping between 10pm-2am  because it will provide what she refers to as the "rest regenerative repair" window. So if you are going to bed at midnight, you are missing out on 2 hours of that precious regenerative time.  Hear what she has to say about this topic and more on the podcast.
