The Power of Parents: What You Need to Know and Do about Underage Drinking

April 07, 2014

When it comes to drinking, there's a big disconnect between what kids do and what parents think they do. For example, 1 in 6 teens binge drinks, but only 1 in 100 parents believes his or her child binge drinks. Many parents also are surprised to know how early children experiment with drinking; for example, about 30% of 8th graders have tried alcohol. But the good news is that what parents teach about alcohol really makes a difference. And MADD has the information and resources you need to give your child a strong, clear message about underage drinking. Tune into Marti & Erin's informative and important discussion with Jennifer Freeburg, Minnesota's Executive Director of MADD, and Firdaush Yasmin, a very impressive young volunteer and member of MADD's Teen Influencer Group.

Whatever your children's ages, what have you taught them about alcohol? What is the core message you give your children about the risks of underage drinking? What new information or practical tips did you gain from this Mom Enough discussion? Please leave a comment below!
