Longing for Greater Meaning: A Conversation with an Expert on Spiritual Development Among Children and Teens

March 24, 2014

Most of us probably have found ourselves speechless in the face of a child's impossible question about religious or spiritual concepts. (Marti & Erin certainly have and they share a few examples in this week's show!) But what does child development research show about the way children develop ideas of spirituality and/or religion? How do spirituality and religion help children and teens thrive? And are there ways religion can be detrimental? How can parents respond when teens question or even reject beliefs they have been taught? This week's guest, Professor Pamela Ebstyne King, has studied this topic among young people from various beliefs and traditions and brings a rich perspective to this discussion of an often-overlooked aspect of child development.

Has your child asked you difficult questions about spirituality or religion? How did you answer? Whatever your family's beliefs or traditions, how do you think you can help your child understand and benefit from the core values that guide your life? Please leave a comment below!
