Coming from a Catholic, working class, Democratic family in Pennsylvania, he was an ardent liberal who worked for the campaigns of Eugene McCarthy, Robert Kennedy, Sargent Shriver, Henry "Scoop" Jackson, and George McGovern. In time, however, he saw ill tendencies in liberalism, and he saw the Democratic party increasingly influenced by academic and Hollywood elites. President Ronald Reagan named to serve as United States Ambassador to the United Nations Commission on Human Rights in 1981 and 1982.
