MedicCast Episode 481
Good day and welcome to this week’s episode of the MedicCast. I’m your host, Jamie Davis the Podmedic and I’d like to welcome you to this week’s show. This week’s show has more excellent content from EMS Today 2016 in Baltimore where I was covering the show from the Physio-Control booth.
First we’ll talk with two of the EMS10 innovation awardees about the projects they implemented that won them the awards. Then we talk with the EMS Siren Amy Eisenhauer about her work to show the risks and challenges with managing patients who are hoarders.
All of these segments this week were recorded thanks to the continuing support and sponsorship of the Physio-Control corporation. Thank them for supporting your EMS podcasting community.

EMS Tip of the Week: EMS 10 Awardees
First up in this week’s segments is a chat with EMS10 Awardee Rob Luckritz about his program to involve civilian first responders to improve EMS response times in parts of Jersey City, New Jersey. Using the initial response of over 100 volunteers, 49 were selected and graduated from the 60 hour training program. Each received a medical bag including oxygen, defibrillator, and tourniquets, as well as their own two-way radio to communicate their response to EMS calls in their vicinity. Here’s that segment with Rob.
Next up I talked with Christoph Redelsteiner, a paramedic and professor at the University of Applied Sciences in St. Pölten, Austria. He is another of the EMS 10 Awardees who was recognized for his efforts to raise paramedic education to the bachelors degree level and beyond in Austria’s EMS education programs. Here’s my chat with Christoph and listen for how he was inspired to go into EMS by a start here in the U.S.
Amy Eisenhauer, The EMS Siren
Finally, I have Amy Eisenhauer, the EMS Siren who comes by the Physio-Control booth to chat with me about a topic she’s doing a lot of education and presentation on, dealing with patients and families who are hoarders. What unique challenges does this present and what can we do to better manage these patients while maintaining our own safety? We’ll find out in the final segment coming up next.
