Emergent Intelligence Corporation has used the doctrine of utilitarianism to provide moral guidance for its sentient, autonomous autopilots. In short, the machines must always do what causes the least harm. But an accident occurs in which autopilot 6439 appears to have not followed this doctrine. The company and the autopilot are taken to court by the crash victims, forcing Emergent Intelligence Corporation to make questionable choices to protect an industrial secret.
