A mentor is different from a protector
A mentor guides and teaches. Can be for Dom or sub
A protector is kind of a Dom-light without the full responsibility of a D/s agreement
There are arguments for and against either
Definitely not required
It must be consensual, and you must have parameters and boundaries.
Choosing a mentor or protector is a lot like choosing a partner – compatibility, communication, a certain amount of trust and faith
